Let me begin back where it started
Back in my home town in old Kentucky
The stars above me gave no solace

For eighteen years I kept to my music
Hid from the others, detached from family
The reasons why I'll describe to you

This, a typical night after my father got home
I don't remember why he started the fight but he would always find a reason
I was up in my room with a guitar to my ear
I tried to drown it out
But still I could hear
It always got loud before the end

I learned to stay away
That's how I got through each day
And from the outside looking in I made it through

Father passed away when I was seventeen
He drank himself to death
His apparition still made sure that mom and I were distant
She never did change and she would follow in his footsteps with the drink
A numb reminder and a kind of anesthetic
On the day that I left she sat upon the couch beside my old guitar
And as I walked out her only words were "lock it on your way out"

That was six years ago the day I left
I won't go that way again
From the outside looking in I have no reason

But I will digress, I confess there was a detail I left out
The one who loved me so I extol
His name was Ollie
My dear companion who would never stray
Who had no bitter words to say
Ollie
The only would who ever heard my call
Who stood beside me through it all

I got the call, my friend, that you had finally left us
And no I feel I have to come back home and tell you goodbye

And it all feels a bit strange
I see how nothing has changed
Yes, from the outside looking in it's still the same
